The construction of India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) at Cochin is expected to be completed in December this year, after which the warship will be launched, Defense Minister Arackaparambil Kurien Antony said Tuesday.
Indian Navy on extensive western deployment
A squadron of four ships is on an extensive tour of ports in the Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The ships will also conduct major exercises with Russia, the UK and France.
Indo-Russian naval drills this month
The exercise INDRA-2009 includes the largest non-carrier warship, the Kirov class nuclear battle cruiser Peter the Great. The warship recently participated in Russo-Venezuelan joint naval exercises in the Caribbean. It also has a controversial technical maintenance history with the Russian navy chief in 2004 having said the warship could ‘explode any moment’.
