Neighbors feverishly adding military muscle: Antony

Indian Defense Minister Arackaparambil Kurian Antony said on Wednesday that India needed to be ‘vigilant and prepared’ and ‘quicken the pace of modernization’ of its armed forces, while pointing out, “Our neighbors are building their military capabilities at a feverish pace.”

Navy’s P-8I design finalized for assembly

Boeing has announced the completion on July 16 of the Final Design Review (FDR) for the P-8I, the Indian Navy’s long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The P-8I, based on the Boeing 737 commercial airplane, is a variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing is developing for the US Navy.

Offset concerns leave vendors uneasy

The offset requirements raised to 50 per cent with the onset of the Defense Procurement Procedure (DPP) last August, continue to make foreign defense vendors uncomfortable. Bell helicopters had dropped out of the race to supply 197 helicopters to the Indian armed forces because of exactly this reason.

The Defense Minister’s repeated statements on cutting down unnecessary delays in arms procurement seems to be a reflection of a new purpose towards arms procurement by India. Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major has echoed that sense of purpose, expecting the Indian Air Force to be able to spend all monies budgeted for procurement this year.
